Each school day begins with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The academy recognizes the importance of order. There is order and an atmosphere of quiet (silence) throughout the school day. Goals and objectives are seen clearly and pursued effectively when there is order. Each school day ends in prayer.
The academy teaches, most importantly, the fundamentals. Students, from the earliest grades, are taught the core subjects: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. They are given a solid foundation in the basics so that as they move on in grades, they build on the core subjects through a more in-depth study by way of classroom discussion and written essays.
The students become proficient in areas such as Geography, History, and Science. In addition, the academy has a strong Vocabulary and Writing program. This is accomplished through selected text, as well as classical Literature.
Students are taught the Catholic Faith through the Faith & Life series. The academy includes: The Baltimore Catechism, Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Lives of the Saints, Doctors of the Church, orthodox Catholic authors, and Church History.
The academy uses Saxon Math. The basics in arithmetic are taught to proficiency. Mathematical concepts are repeatedly practiced and used in various exercises: word problems, hands-on application, etc.
The students at the academy use Wordly Wise for their vocabulary. The meaning and spelling of words are learned through an assortment of exercises that include reading comprehension.
The Voyages in English text and Language Lessons are used to give a classical, thorough understanding of grammar and writing.
Classical, great books, and Cardinal Readers are used to give the students a true understanding of the written word through a classical approach. The students learn plot, theme, description, character, and setting as they grow in appreciation of fine literature.
Students are given dictation which helps to strengthen their listening and writing skills.
In the early grades, the students will read about famous people, events, their neighborhood, and the world in general. Writing and other activities which include art and music will accompany these studies.
The students will then study western civilization, the people and events throughout history and the affect these have had on our world today. The students' studies in History will include Ancient Israel, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and American History.
A strong emphasis is put on geographical studies. Students are taught geography whenever the opportunity presents itself in their daily studies. Whether the student is learning History, Science, Literature, Religion, Art, or Music, references are always made to geographical locations. Separate geography lessons are taught on a regular basis through several different activities. The students are expected to become proficient in geography and map skills.
The students in the early grades learn by exploring the created world around them. The students are encouraged to observe the design and harmony in the created world.
Students will go on to learn more in depth: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science.
The students are taught through a variety of experiments and appropriate field trips.
Younger students begin learning the French language, and in the middle school years, students are taught the Latin language. Students in Latin class learn root words and vocabulary, and practice memorization of classical poetry and prayers.
Music and art are woven into the student's subjects. Literature, History, Religion, and Science allow for creative projects to accompany and enhance the areas they are studying. The academy takes a classical approach to art and music so the student will gain an understanding and an appreciation for the historical arts. Art and Music are also taught as separate classes.
